5 tips to start your fitness journey

As I mentioned before in my introduction, exercising can be a physical and mental battle. Everyone has their own journey, goals, and expectations. Just like people, exercising is unique and can come in many different forms and styles. It is important to understand that it is not a one size fits all. What works for some people might not work for you. If you are new to working out or maybe you are still debating if this is for you, then give yourself a pat on the back because this is the first step.

The beginning can be a bit intimidating and overwhelming. You know what? That’s ok! Your fitness journey is going to be a process and won’t always be easy. Here are five tips to kickstart your new lifestyle.

1. Write down your goals

Goal setting is a great way to get you in the right mindset because its intentional. Research shows that people are 42% more likely to achieve a goal if they write it down. If you have never done this before then maybe start with something small. This can be as simple as taking a 30 minute walk each day, or trading your morning donut for an apple!

2. Pace yourself

Working out takes time and patience. If you start a new program, then make sure you can handle it. You don’t want to exert yourself too fast or too soon because you risk injuring yourself. It is better to take your time and gradually make improvements, than trying to put all your energy in the first workout. This will burn you out too quickly and your fitness journey might not last long.

3. Do workouts you enjoy

This one seems obvious, but sometimes when people think of exercise, they think of lots of cardio or weightlifting. That is not the case! There are many things that can get your heart rate up and break a sweat. Pilates, yoga, HIIT, swimming and cycling are just a few that are great workouts.

4. Fuel your body

Stay hydrated and feed your body nutritious food. This means having a balanced diet and making healthier choices. If done correctly and efficiently, then you can maximize your workouts. Fueling also provides the energy needed to push yourself.

5. Be patient

Results don’t happen in one day and you’re going to have tough days. It is important to remember that it will pay off. Your choices and habits are all contributing to one goal, which is to become a better version of yourself. As long as you stay committed and determined then nothing will stand in your way.
